BIS 10500-1991 standards are applicable in India. This standard is predicated on the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO). However, considerable modifications are made up from time to time. the rationale for this is often that the beverage supplied to us has become so contaminated that the quantity of drugs like TDS, hardness, chloride in it’s exceeded the prescribed standard. In this type of situation, the limit (allowable) of their presence was increased. Generally, if the TDS content in beverages exceeds 500 mg/l, it becomes unpalatable.
There are very few better sources of water, people become addicted to it. The BIS standard sets the acceptable quality of drinking water for humans. For practically all industrial and a few professional uses, the purity level of water should be very high. In most cases, none of the solids should be dissolved in any way.
The BIS standard states that the maximum desired TDS amount is 500 mg/l and in the absence of any better source of water, the maximum permissible level is 2000 mg/l. Similarly, the maximum hardness ie calcium carbonate (CaCo3) has an optimum level of 300 mg/liter and a maximum permissible level of 600 mg/liter.
